In dowtown Lisbon, right in front of a building where medicine has been taught for centuries, there’s a statue of a man. That man is called Sousa Martins, an accomplished doctor and teacher that lived in Lisbon during the 19th century, and someone who was also known for his work with the poorest of the city.
Is this last part that started a cult that lasts until today. For decades people have been roaming to his statue, leaving flowers and lighting candles, asking for a cure for their illnesses, and later, when their prayers have been responded, show their gratitude to the healing doctor by leaving a token at the base of the statue, where all others pile up.
