Workers of Père Lachaise

3 Minutes Read

A school project, that’s what this is. I spent most of last week at Paris with the company of nine inspiring photographers, attending a workshop on Visual Storytelling (following my growing interest for documentary and longer projects) lead by the experienced Ed Kashi. One of the things expected from myself, apart from being there every morning to attend the master classes, was a very small photo project, with all the photos, editing and sequencing done with Ed’s supervision. After some thoughts and projects of my own focused on the Portuguese diaspora in France that didn’t happen, and having some of my favorite proposed projects already taken, I arrived to Paris empty handed but somehow ended up shooting a slightly more gloomy subject than I was thinking: Perè Lachaise, the iconic cemetery and burial ground of artists. But my main focus would not be Jim Morrison’s grave or the many who visit all the resting places of so many famous people, but the hidden people who keep it going: the several workers that dig the graves or do all the maintenance of such an iconic place. And to my surprise many of them actually spoke the same language as me.
